Jesus made it clear that we are not to spend our time building a hypothetical faith and think that by doing so we have somehow "practiced" religion. The parable of the sheep and the goats forcefully illustrates the mandate for Christ's followers to be personally involved in helping others.
Question: Should we do it even if our motives are selfish?
Do we help others because Jesus said to, or because we are motivated to by His love? There is a sense in which it doesn't matter because it's not about us, but about the people out there and around us who need our help. It does matter in that our service will be more caring and focused when it springs from a heart that is centered in Christ.
If the feelings aren't there, try acting on the principle that "people need help, and I have something to offer." You cannot manufacture feelings of compassion. Just help others because you can, and ask God to give you a heart of compassion.
